Constructed and established in 1921 as the Capitol Theatre (Royalty Theatre 1982-2008), this classic structure, complete with a large mezzanine and furnishings reminiscent of a classic Hollywood theater, is one of the oldest operating theatres in the state of Florida.

REH President & CEO Zev Buffman
Zev Buffman, new Ruth Eckerd Hall, Inc., President and CEO in his first official message, announced today that the Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater has just received a Quarter of a Million Dollars gift from a family foundation that has been deeply involved and a long time supporter of Ruth Eckerd Hall. The family wishes to remain anonymous.
“This is a huge gift to aggressively demonstrate the role of the Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater,” said Buffman. “As the ‘new guy’, I look forward to meeting with every partner connected to the economic development, tourism and education of this beautiful, hidden treasure in Pinellas County.”
“It is time to get the Capitol Theatre campaign on the fast track mode and there’s no better way to start the campaign,” said Rick Bouchard, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Inc., Chairman of the Board. “I look forward to working with Zev, Stephanie Smith, our recently installed Chief Development Officer, our entire Board and staff, as we lead the way in the continued revitalization of downtown Clearwater.”
Ruth Eckerd Hall Inc., presents more than 100 performances each year at the Capitol Theatre including sold-out concerts with Lindsey Buckingham, Richard Marx, Todd Rundgren’s UTOPIA, Mindi Abair and more. “In the very near future, we will also produce new theatrical events at the Capitol Theatre,” commented Buffman.

Inside the Capitol Theatre
This year, Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road entered into an agreement with the city to produce Blast Friday, a free family-friendly event held on Cleveland Street in downtown Clearwater on the last Friday of the month. This event includes live national talent such as Rick Derringer, POCO and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. The monthly event continues to set new attendance records and breathe life into downtown.
